In 2002, Brian and I set out to do a big hike. The story of that, for those who haven't been bored by it already, is for another day. But in preparation for this sojourn, we carefully pared our equipment to maximize functionality while minimizing weight. This meant making a lot of our own gear. It was a great exercise, and we got our packs down to about 15 lbs per person, without food or water.
I recalled this earlier today when I was carrying not only my 21 lb baby, but my 33 lb toddler.
