Erin's picking up Mama's habits

Erin did her first crossword puzzle tonight.  

Project: Pipe Cleaner Sight Words

I saw this idea on Pinterest (where else).  Set out a bunch of cards with sight words on them.  Put out a fist full of letter beads and some pipe cleaners.  Let the fun begin! 

Robin tested it out first for me. Her favorite letter is, of course "R" so she liked picking them out and lacing them on the pipe cleaners. 

I set out the invitation to Erin starting just with the letter beads and pipe cleaners.  She first made a bracelet with her name on it and some heart beads, for Brian to take when he goes to PDX so he can think of her. 

I then presented her with the list of 30 words they're working on in her kindergarten. (No, not all at the same time. They've covered about 5 so far.)  She got excited and tore through about 10 of them, reading the words with no problem and stringing the beads happily.  A good 15 minutes of focused activity! Then she said she was done.  I'd say it was a success! 

Robin enjoyed some more bead stringing and made a necklace.

There's so much going on in this movie, I won't spend time talking about it. Just will tag it with a bunch of things and let you enjoy!

Robin June, Grammar Police

A few weeks ago, Brian and Robin were talking.

R: Where's Mommy?
B: She's at the park.
R: No, Daddy.  Mommy is IN the park.

This morning, we had waffles and little dipping cups of maple syrup.  I saw Robin slurping the last few drops of syrup from her cup.

A: Robin, did you eat the syrup all gone?
R: No Mommy, I drank the syrup all gone.

What does it mean?

Erin has entered a new phase of conversation, asking the definition of words she doesn't know.  She never when through a "why" phase, and I guess I just assumed she would pick up the definition of words through context.  Now when we're reading she'll stop me frequently to ask, "What does 'insignificant' mean?  What does 'gangster' mean? What does 'spectacles' mean?"  I asked her if the boys in her class play "cops and robbers" and was answered with a quizzical look, "Mom, what does 'cops' mean?"  Supposedly she's picking up an average of 6 words a day now.  Some days it feels like she's trying to learn the whole dictionary.

E-R-11

When we ask Erin how to spell her name, it's inevitably "E, R, eleven". Which I guess makes some good sense if you're two and you take a close look at "ERIN". 

Three months ago she would reply "E, R, Erin", which makes good sense if you're listening to the last two letters.

Erin woke up today and wanted to know what the words on my shirt were.
E: "What dat spell?"
B: "Well I don't know, why don't you tell me?"
Then pointing to each letter in the word "Turner" on my shirt:
E: "E, R, eleven, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eleventeen."

Vajayjay

Erin has a little redness in her lady business, so I told her "Oh, sweetie... you've got some redness on your vajayjay.  Let's good look on the intertubes to see how we can fix it."

So, I grabbed the laptop, did some searching, all the while Erin pointed to each page of text saying: "Is [that] my beh-day-day?"  To which, of course, I responded, "Um, yes."

Erin is currently running around the room singing: "My beh-day-day! My buh-day-day!  My buh-day-day!  My beh-day-day."

On Language

It occurs to me that Erin could be transitioning from "toddler" to "kid" now that she's using parts of speech I don't even know the names of.   Just now I found myself Googling "prepositional phrase".

"What di did you see?"

Erin's favorite song these days is "Brown bear, brown bear" sung to the multi-purpose "twinkle twinkle" tune. She's showing off her vocal range here, as she sits in her "boat" reading/singing the book.

Erinisms

Said with effort: "Oooh, eh-bee."
(Said when attempting to lift something heavy.)

"Mi-mi, Da-dee."
(Said when I'm in her way. Translation: "Excuse me, Daddy" )

Said with arms crossed across chest for comic affect: "Sooooooo!", as in "So, how's it going?"
(Just like it sounds: being funny.)

Said pointing at Steve our cat: "Seeb! No!!"
(I guess Dr. A and I tell Steve not to do things a lot)
